About the Event

The Funky Owls Chess Club at Woodside Montessori

Chess club is open to all current Woodside students. Club members will be grouped into levels and receive 30-min. instructional sessions with and additional 1-1.5hrs to practice the lessons as well as free play chess games. Younger students can be picked up earlier during their practice session.

The structure of the program is as follows:

3:30-4:00 Preschool & New-Starts (for ZERO or nearly zero experience)

4:00-4:30 Newbies (some experience, but lacking strategy -- aside from "to checkmate", knows most of the rules)

4:30-5:00 Juniors (knows all the rules -- en passant, stalemate, checkmate, all rules governing caslting, aware of some ways to determine a draw)

5:00-5:30 Mates Class. This class is elective and free for those enrolled in Newbies and Juniors. It is free for New-Starts, but they will not be able to join class until they have learned all the pieces. This class can also be stand-alone for those who are not in the above classes. This class will focus on learning basic checkmate patterns, and end game concepts.

Before instruction sessions, club members can play chess freely until called to the instruction area. After instructions, they will go back to the play area to practice their lessons. Once done with the practice, they may freely challenge each other to a game.

Depending on the interest in this first run of the club, the future may include instruction time for Advanced Junior level players. But all levels are invited to join the fun!
